When your phone says βStorage almost full,β apps lag, camera stops, and updates fail. You do not always need a new phone β you need a clear cleanup plan.
1. Check what is using space
Go to Settings β Storage (on some phones: Settings β Device care β Storage). You will usually see categories such as:
- Apps and app data
- Images and videos
- Audio
- Documents and downloads
- System and cache
Start with the largest category. Do not delete system files manually.
2. Clear app cache (safe)
Cache is temporary data. Clearing it does not delete your login or personal files in most apps.
- Settings β Apps
- Select a heavy app (Facebook, TikTok, Chrome, games)
- Storage β Clear cache
Avoid βClear dataβ unless you accept signing in again and losing app settings.
3. Uninstall apps you do not use
Sort apps by size and remove what you have not opened in months. For preinstalled apps you cannot uninstall, use Disable when available.
4. Photos and videos
- Back up to Google Photos / computer, then delete local copies
- Remove burst photos and old WhatsApp statuses/media
- In WhatsApp: Settings β Storage and data β Manage storage
5. Downloads folder
Open Files app β Downloads. Delete old APKs, ZIP files, and repeated documents. APK installers are safe to remove after installation.
6. Built-in cleaner tools
Samsung (Device care), Xiaomi (Security), and others include storage cleaners. Use them for junk and duplicates, but review the list before confirming delete.
7. Move media to SD card or PC
If your phone supports microSD, move photos and videos in the Files app. Or connect USB and copy to a computer, then delete from the phone.
What not to do
- Do not root only to free space
- Do not download random βcleaner APKsβ from unknown sites
- Do not delete folders you do not recognize in Android system directories
Summary: Check Storage β clear cache β remove unused apps β clean Downloads and chat media β back up then delete large videos. Repeat monthly and storage problems become rare.
